Bitola – The City of Consuls
Bitola is located in Pelagonia, the largest valley in Macedonia.
On its western side it is embraced by mountain Baba and its towering peak Pelister, a protected national park area with an abundance of different flora and fauna species. This is the only place in the world where the endemic Molika pine trees create woods. There are also exceptional glacial lakes, ski resorts, and a lot of sites where you can relax and enjoy the natural peace and tranquility.
If you are interested to learn more about ancient civilizations, here, you can find original mosaics, dating from the 4th century. You can visit Heraclea Lyncestis which will take you back to antiquity and you will get the chance to face the authentic remains of ancient history.
But if you prefer modern life and urban city living, this city offers you plenty of opportunities for entertainment. You can walk in the prominent walking area Shirok Sokak (Wide Alley). It is like a runway where you will encounter the elegant, fashionable and friendly citizens of Bitola. You can go shopping, drink a cup of coffee and feel trendy and unique. You can also try some of the local delicacies offered by local restaurants and make a selection from the mixture of Eastern and Western tastes that collide here. It will provide you with a wide range of possibilities, so you can leave your cares aside and enjoy.
Bitola is the second largest town in Macedonia. It is a regional industrial and economic center. It has also been a diplomatic center ever since the Ottoman period because many European countries had consulates in Bitola, which is why it is called “the city of consuls”. Therefore, Ottoman influence on the one, and European aristocracy on the other hand, made a huge impact on the life of the citizens of Bitola, shaping and defining their lifestyle even today. Thus, the architecture of modern Bitola and the manners and culture of its citizens make it a special classy place to be visited and experienced.
