Purpose and objectives:

International Folklore Festival "Keeping traditions" (hereinafter Festival) is held to promote folk art and preserve the multi-national cultural heritage of Russia. The festival is a place where the talented folklore performers from all over the world meet each other to make friends and share their culture. The festival promotes the development of intercultural dialogue between the folk artists from different countries as well as upbringing the younger generation in the spirit of patriotism and tolerance to cultural traditions and customs of another ethnos.
The festival has a competitive nature and enables participants to present their achievements in the field of music, singing, dancing, rituals and customs.

Terms of the contest:

We invite vocal, dance, instrumental folk groups and theatres as well as soloists and duets to participate in the festival.
Every group may participate in the fair on handicrafts with their crafts products from native region.
The groups can participate both in a contest and in public concerts with a programme not exceeding 8 minutes for competition and 15 minutes for public concert.
All participants of the festival should pay participation fee and travel expenses to and from St. Petersburg.

I Choreography (Soloists, duets, trios, ensembles, collectives)
A - Folk dance (traditional and stylized)
B - Classic dance, neo-classic
C - Modern choreography (free plastic, jazz, modern)
D - Variety choreography (show groups, step, oriental dances, disco)
E - Sports choreography (hip-hop, techno, street, electric boogie, break dance)
F - Theaters of dance
G - Ballroom dance
II Vocal (soloists and duets)
A - Authentic vocal, folk vocal
В - Modern arrangement of folk songs (in any genre: classical academic singing, pop singing, jazz, etc.)
C - Academic vocal
D - Variety vocal       
III Choirs and vocal ensembles (trios, ensembles (from 4 to 13 participants), choirs (more than 13 participants))
A - Authentic vocal, folk vocal
В - Modern arrangement of folk songs (in any genre: classical academic singing, pop singing, jazz, etc.)
C - Academic vocal
D - Variety vocal       
IV Instrumental work (orchestras, ensembles and soloists)
V Theatrical work (miniatures, excerpts from performances, excerpts from musicals, excerpts from ballets, oral folk art, declamation, puppet theater, musical theater, fashion studio).

Age categories:

I: age 7-9
II: age 10-12
III: age 13-15
IV: age 16-40
V: age 41 and over 
In each age group, the performers of another age are admitted but not more than 30% of the total number of performers.

Mandatory requirements:

  • The participation in the festival-contest means the participation in one contest category and one age category.
  • The competition program includes a performance of 1 or 2 various works up to 8 minutes total.
  • The program may include authentic folklore or modern arrangements of folk arts based on folklore material of any country or region.
  • Vocal competition works should be accompanied by phonogram "minus-one" or live music. A cappella performance is encouraged.
  • Participants should send in advance phonograms by e-mail, and also bring them on a flash drive or CD (each track on a separate CD).
  • It is not allowed to use lighting effects during the performances.

Evaluation criteria:

  • Technique – 10 points
  • Artistic impression (image, disclosure of the content, emotions, artistry) - 10 points
  • Presentation (costume, props, stage direction, selection of repertoire, stage design) -10 points
  • Difficulty of the performance -  10 points


  • To assess competitive performances, a qualified jury composed of cultural and art experts, representatives of creative and public organizations of Russia and foreign countries is created.
  • The list of jury members is not disclosed prior to the start of the festival.
  • Each member of the jury has the right to vote and holding discussions prior to a decision by all the members of the jury.
  • Chairman of the jury is entitled to 2 votes in the event of dispute.
  • The jury does not take into account the age, material standing, social class, nationality and place of residence of the contestants - only creativity on absolutely equal terms in accordance with this Regulation.
  • The jury may decide to cancel the contest on one of the categories specified in this Regulation, due to the insufficient number of applications filed.
  • The jury's decision is final and non-negotiable.


  • The accumulating of Awarding Foundation is entrusted to the Festival Organizing Committee. Any organization or individual can make charitable contributions to the festival and establish their special awards and prizes.
  • In each category and age group winners are assigned to Laureates of I, II, III degrees, and diploma holders of I, II, III degrees.
  • The laureates are awarded a cup and a diploma, the diploma holders are awarded a diploma.
  • The Grand Prix is awarded to only one of the winners of the 1st Prize among children from 7 to 16 years old and one of the winners of the 1st Prize among adults aged over 16, who will get the highest number of votes of jury members, but not less than 51%.
  • Grand Prix winners are awarded by a cup and Prize of the festival sponsors which might be in cash.
  • Each team/soloist is awarded a diploma; each participant receives a souvenir of the festival.
  • The leaders of groups and pedagogues will receive official Letters of Thanks.
According to the results of the contest the following special prizes are to be awarded:
  • The Best Soloist
  • The Best Choreography
  • The Best Artistry
  • The Best Folk Costume
  • Preservation of Folk Traditions
  • At the discretion of the jury, the best ensembles and soloists may be invited to participate in folk festivals on a preferential or complimentary base.
  • The Laureates of the festival may be granted by EAFF certificates of 200-500 euro to participate in the European/World Championship of Folklore.
  • The jury reserves the right not to award prizes and change the number of awards.
  • Awarding will be held during the Closing ceremony of the festival.
  • The leaders of groups are required to attend the Closing ceremony of the festival. After closing the festival diplomas and other awards are not available.

Participation fee:

Festival Package Standard: 180 EUR per person (4* hotel in the historical center) - DBL/TWIN standard rooms with own bathroom
Festival Package Comfort: 198 EUR per person (4* hotel in the historical center) -  in DBL/TWIN deluxe rooms with own bathroom

Participation fee includes:

  • 4 nights’ accommodation at “Saint-Petersburg****” hotel on the banks of the Neva River
  • 4 buffet breakfasts
  • 4 buffet dinners
  • St. Petersburg sightseeing city tour by bus with a guide
  • Performances during Opening/Closing ceremony and public concerts
  • Transfer to the concert venue by bus
  • Souvenirs, diplomas.
  • Participation in one category of competition
  • One free leader for a group of 22 persons (21+1)
  • Participation fee doesn’t include price of escort by a bus from airport to the hotel and back. The transfer fee will be billed individually depending on the size of a group and time of arrival.
  • Accommodation in SGL rooms is available upon request at an extra fee.
  • Extra nights available upon request at an extra fee.
Approved groups pay in advance a 10% guarantee fee, which is to be deducted at the final payment. As a second step - 30% reservation fee. 
In case of refusal to participate in the festival received after February 10, 2019 the fees are not refundable.
The Organizing Committee will send the bank details upon receiving the application form. Booking confirmation will be sent, if only the Organizing Committee receive guarantee fee.
Travel & visa terms:
  • Every participant should cover the expense of the international flight to and from St. Petersburg.
  • Every participant of the festival must have Travel Insurance to cover medical and accidental coverage during the period of the festival.
  • Each participating group is responsible for its own visa to Russia. Invitations for visa are available upon payment of 30% reservation fee which is not refundable.
  • The recommended arrival date for participating groups to St. Petersburg is March 10, 2019 by 2:00 PM (afternoon).
  • The recommended departure date is March 14, 2018 by 12:00 (afternoon).
  • Participants may extend their stay in St. Petersburg at an extra fee.

Other terms:

  • By their participation in the festival, collectives and soloists give their consent to the right to record their performances on audio/video and broadcast them on television channels or use by other means.
  • For participants wishing to visit Saint Petersburg or other tour sights, guided tours are organized upon preliminary requests.

Arrival of participants to St. Petersburg. You will be met by our guide. Transfer to the hotel. Check-in.

20:00 - Festival Opening Ceremony.

March 11

09:00 - Rehearsal.

11:00 - Competition performances.

21:00 - Disco night. Exchange with gifts and souvenirs. 

March 12

St. Petersburg half day city tour with a guide (highlights of marvelous St. Petersburg including Peter and Paul Fortress, St. Isaac's Cathedral, Nevskiy Prospekt). *Optional tours.

Festival performances.

March 13

19:00 Raffle of Grand Prix. Gala-concert. Awarding. Closing Ceremony of the IV International folklore festival “Keeping traditions”.

March 14

Check out up to 12:00. Departure of the participants.


Any group willing to participate must submit an Application form.
Approved groups pay in advance a 10% guarantee fee, which is to be deducted at the final payment.
