Ohrid is an important tourist and pilgrimage place with its ancient ruins, beautiful amphitheatre, three citadel walls, St.Sofia Cathedral, St.Jovan Kaneo church and many other sightseeings. There is a breathtaking view from the plateau over Ohrid Lake on Galicica mountain towering from behind. St.Naum monastery (one of the most beautiful monasteries in Macedonia) is another important place to visit in the surroundings of Ohrid. It was founded in the 910 by St.Naum, but the present-day church was built in the 16th c. and only the side chapel with the tomb of St. Naum is left of the original church. Gallery of exclusive icons, museums, workshops for handmade paper, woodcarving and the famous Ohrid pearls are among hundreds sites for tourists worth to visit. There is also a strong Roman connection to the city, since Lychnidos was along the famous route Via Egnatia, build in the 2nd century B.C., connecting the Adriatic and Aegean sea. Considering the number of churches located in the Old town - 365, and according to the legend about the local people, who from immemorial time every single day honour different saint, Ohrid is called “the Balkan Jerusalem”, successfully playing the role as a big pilgrimage spot for the Orthodox Christians all over the world. Today Ohrid is a cultural, spiritual and tourist centre.
