Today, on October 1st, the world celebrates International Music Day – an initiative created in 1975 by the world-renowned violinist and then-chairman of the International Music Council of UNESCO, Lord Yehudi Menuhin. The purpose of this day is to highlight the importance of music as a universal language that connects people of all cultures and ages. The history of this celebration begins with a letter dated November 30, 1974, signed by Menuhin and Boris Yarustovsky, vice-chairman of the International Music Council. In the letter, they announce that the first International Music Day would be held on October 1, 1975, in accordance with the resolution adopted in 1973 at the Council's General Assembly in Lausanne. The European Association of Folklore Festivals (EAFF) proudly supports this celebration, calling on everyone to immerse themselves in the richness of musical traditions. Folklore music, as part of our cultural heritage, is a fundamental element that unites communities and preserves the identity of nations. Let us today celebrate music in all its forms and pay tribute to those who create and share it with us. Happy International Music Day!
