During the annual session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage - 19 COM, held from December 2 to 7, 2024, in Asunción, Paraguay, 63 new elements were inscribed across the organization's three heritage lists, aimed at preserving intangible cultural heritage and 3 transferred from the urgent safeguarding list, proposed by delegations from 90 countries. - 2 elements were added to the **List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding**, emphasizing the need for immediate measures to ensure their preservation. - 61 elements were inscribed on the **Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity**, including three transferred from the urgent safeguarding list. - 3 programs were included in the **Register of Good Safeguarding Practices**, showcasing successful strategies for the protection of intangible cultural heritage. The Committee's session in Paraguay, which was attended by more than 900 participants from 120 countries, "was the second largest" since its creation, said Minister of Culture of Paraguay, Adriana Ortiz. For the first time, elements from Brunei Darussalam, Ghana, Myanmar, Rwanda, and Somalia were inscribed in UNESCO’s lists. This marks a significant step toward the international recognition of the cultural diversity of these nations. With these new additions, the total number of elements on UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage lists has reached 788, representing the cultural heritage of 150 countries. The session was chaired by H.E. Ms. Nancy Ovelar de Gorostiaga, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Delegate of Paraguay to UNESCO. UNESCO’s lists continue to play a pivotal role in safeguarding global cultural heritage, promoting its diversity, resilience, and importance for future generations.
